Experiences at the lodge
Yala National Park
Uga Chena Huts offers access to Sri Lanka’s largest and oldest national park which has the highest leopard population density in the world. Yala stuns visitors with its variety of biomes – monsoon, semi-deciduous and thorn forests, grasslands, freshwater, marine wetlands and sandy beaches where the only footprints you will see belong to foraging birds and animals.
Broadcasting 44 different resident mammal species and dozens of reptile species including turtles, crocodiles, flying snakes and elegant fan-throated lizards. Yala has no less than 215 resident and migrant birds, of which the flamboyant peacock is one of the most common. Excursions throughout the region can be arranged based on request. There are plenty of places to visit in Yala, Sri Lanka and you can explore Sri Lankan wildlife and nature at Uga Chena Huts, making the most of your escape.
Sundown Drives
We love to make the most of our dramatic, wildlife-rich surroundings, and on our sundowner drives, we introduce you to some of our favourite secret locations. Chosen for their spectacular scenery and absolute privacy, we will serve sundowners, cocktails, and canapés at an exclusive spot by the lagoon, perfect for watching the sunset. With this experience, you can unwind and take in the dramatic surroundings on the outskirts of Yala National Park, whilst enjoying a sumptuous gourmet picnic.
Cultural Drives
Discover the rich cultural heritage of this region of Sri Lanka on one of our discovery drives. Our drives focus on Sithulpawwa, a former Buddhist monastery in the heart of Yala National Park, which dates back to the 2nd century BC. Its series of stupas sitting majestically atop rocky outcrops peering across a vast canopy of the untouched scrub jungle (with the ocean visible in the distance) is easily one of Sri Lanka’s most stirring images.
Grey langur monkeys are one of the temple’s most prolific residents – easily outnumbering the number of clergies currently in residence – though since the road to Sithulpawwa travels through Yala wildlife is very much part of the experience. We also stop off at Magul Maha Vihara, an ancient forest hermitage thought to date back to the same period. Our cultural drives end with sundowners served to you beside a lake.

1000% recommend this place. If I could give 20 stars, I would!!
This place was our last stay in Sri Lanka and it was also the pinnacle of our trip. We loved EVERYTHING about it. I’d say it was one of the best hotels we’ve done in our life (and we’ve travelled quite a bit ;)).
The staff was one of the highlights: everybody was so kind and professional. The food/drinks were crazy good and I can’t even begin to tell you about all the little attentions that we got. The safaris were sooo cool!
We even saw a leopard on our first outing, which is not an every day thing. Our ranger, Praneeth, was so knowledgeable and impeccable and very patient with all my questions hehe. He even came to sit with us at night and chat about the stars (omg that stars that we saw… insane!!). The room was straight out of a magazine!! The minibar was full and all free of charge.
It was just so incredible and I wish I could have stayed for a week!

This hotel is amazing, don’t think about it, just go!
– The staff are the kindest and most attentive we’ve met. They anticipate, adapt, are proactive and are exceptionally kind. Whether it’s the waiters (special thanks to the king of kings Chinthaka but also to Nuwan & Chamara), the Rangers and their detailed explanations, the cleaning staff or the reception staff, they make the experience truly unique.
– The food is delicious and varied. You’ll find great Western and local dishes on the menu at every meal. Special thanks to the chef for his special creations.
– the individual huts are magnificent, clean and very pleasant.
– the safaris are very interesting and you can see dozens of animals (elephants, crocodiles, leopards etc) in sumptuous landscapes.
– finally, thank you again to the staff for all the little personal touches and activities they offered us.
In short, everything was perfect, you don’t have to think about anything and just enjoy this timeless place.

The security on site ensured we felt safe at all times. The manager was attentive and accommodating. In summary, everything was perfect. Highly recommended!

Although this place is great it is really expensive, so after your stay you ask yourself if it was worth it.
Honestly this was the most expensive night that I have ever paid.
It was a special occasion, so I didn’t bother too much about the price tag, but it’s really too much. As a side note on the special occasion, although communicated twice to the hotel, we’ve got the bare minimum treatment and we didn’t feel too much special.
